Kevin Lyons revisits his iconic logo to celebrate 25 years of Giant Step. As Kevin recently shared on Instagram:
Over 23 years ago I had the distinct opportunity to design a logo for the already legendary Thursday night party in NYC named simply Giant Step. I was given said opportunity basically as a kid. I walked into the office of Maurice Bernstein and Jonathan Rudnick and simply wanted to buy a record one afternoon. That night I stayed up the entire night drawing my very first and only concept, and returned the very next day. It has stood the test of time for all 23 years since. And it literally jump started my entire career. For heads that were there, you already know, but for many you can’t imagine how fun Giant Step Thursday nights downtown were. This was the height of Acid Jazz and Jazz-Hip-Hop. Bands like the Groove Collective, Repercussions, and the early Roots Crew backed incredible mc’s like Guru, Tribe, MCSolaar, AG, Jamalski, Sens Unik, Masta Ace, The Last Poets, Digable Planets, Massive Attack, Chaka Kan, Gil Scott Heron and so many more would just roll through often unannounced…. I was such a record collector and a huge fan of the great @swifty_typografix and Straight No Chaser and Talkin Loud, so it was both an honor and a sincere privilege to be part of that culture … This summer @giantstep turns 25 …. And Maurice asked me to incorporate a 25 into the logo.
